ESPN has a series that is often played on TV called E:60 which goes in-depth on different issues in the world of sports. Many of the stories are features on different athletes who have had interesting experiences in their lives. This particular story is about DJ Williams, a football player with the Green Bay Packers whose father was abusive and addicted to crack cocaine. This story is very well done, and is basically narrated by the family themselves, an aspect I really appreciate.
This story is full of emotion, and although some may say it’s too emotional, as long as the story is taken for what it is, it is understandable that it may seem over dramatic. This is obviously a topic which is not easy for the family to talk about, nor should it be. The narrator does a good job in the parts that she has, and there are a variety of sources used, whether it family or other people involved in Williams’ life. Near the end of the segment, the reporter even visits the jail and talks to Williams’ father.
This story is a great example of the old journalistic saying of “show, don’t tell”.
And it’s definitely worth your time. The story of a Super Bowk Champion. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=6827611&categoryid=6-140
