Well, this sounds familiar. Someone gets hurt at a baseball game. Earlier in the season, it was the Texas man at the game with his son. Trying to snatch a ball that was thrown into the stands, the man fell over the railing and plunged 8 feet to his death, with his son looking on and crying for his dad. Sounds that haunted the outfielder who threw the ball to the man.
Today, a 12-year old boy is still recovering from being hit with a foul ball line drive last week. He spent 5 days in an intensive care unit, and may require additional surgery.
Last week I pitched a story about baseball player safety, but perhaps a story should be written about the safety of the fans too. The ball is hit into the stands at very high speeds, and can cause serious damage to fans not paying attention as we have seen.
Obviously, it is a fine line between safety and fans being able to see the field. To make things totally safe, they could put up netting all around the field, but this would make it terrible to watch and is simply not practical. Where is that balance? Or is it good enough as it is? Should people be responsible for looking out for themselves while watching the game? This story would raise a lot of questions.
