Wow. It must have been a very long summer.
Hockey is only in its exhibition stage, the preseason, and hockey players must have really missed smashing into each other during their time off, as more suspensions have been handed out than in recent memory.
Although, perhaps it’s not just the players reacquainting with each other. There’s a new sheriff in town. Brendan Shanahan has taken over for Colin Campbell as the man who hands out the suspension. New sheriff means new laws, so Shanahan may be tougher on criminals (or players, whichever you prefer).
This would be a good broadcasting story, and an interview with Shanahan would really make it a great piece, asking what he wants to do differently, and why he feels this change is necessary. Random players throughout the league could also weigh in on the changes and whether or not they like them, whether they are too lenient or too stiff.
It would also be interesting to see what some of the suspended players have to say, whether they support the suspensions or whether they claim innocence. The footage of the actual plays definitely makes this story perfect for broadcast, as the viewer can ‘play’ as Shanahan, making their decision of the punishment in their mind and comparing it to the official decision.
