This news story is related to a blog post I made last week about Don Cherry and his comments on Hockey Night in Canada’s first period segment called Coach’s Corner. The CBC, who broadcasts Hockey Night in Canada, also has a news station which is probably Canada’s largest news station, and watched by millions of viewers. They ran a short story about the fact that the three former players that were called out by Cherry (Stu Grimson, Chris Nilan, and Jim Thompson) were seeking legal action against Cherry.
The facts of the story were all there, but the tone of the story seemed to me like it wasn’t giving fair recognition to the side opposing Cherry. The reporter seemed biased, not necessarily in what she said, but how she said it.
This past Saturday, Cherry did apologize, but nonetheless, I feel this story by CBC was still pretty unfair. The majority of what we say is expressed not through the actual words we say, but rather in the emotion, the tone of voice, and our body language.
I understand that the CBC wants to protect their most famous on-air talent, but not at the expense of integrity and fairness in journalism.
