Well, for my first story reporting for 519 Online News, Alyssa and I picked an easy story to ease into it, right? Wrong.
Right away, we knew it would be tough, because our story is about sharks, and there are no sharks around here. At this point, it looks like a Canadian documentary, Sharkwater, is going to let us use some clips from their documentary, but we are awaiting their final reply still.
Then, since shark fin soup is a part of Chinese culture, there is a language barrier. We traveled to a Chinese restaurant that sells shark fin soup to try to ask them about how important it is to them, and they thought we were trying to sell them shark fins. Eventually we straightened things out (I think), and of course I’m not blaming the restaurant owner, but it was just another thing that didn’t work out.
Then, there was the phone interview scheduled for 11 am today. Alyssa called at 11, then 4 more times between 11:00 and 11:30, but never got a response, so she called one more time and left a message asking him to call her back. She still hasn’t got a response.
Perhaps tomorrow will be a better day. Actually, make that “tomorrow had better be a better day.”
