Every once in awhile, it’s good to just have some fun.
The piece I’m critiquing this week is an old piece, from last season, about a year ago, but I haven’t seen anything like it since, so I wanted to share it. After scoring his first NHL goal, Jordan Eberle was the subject of a spoof report that was very well done… so well done, in fact, that some of my friends were convinced that it was a serious news story.
TSN got players from the team, including Eberle himself, in on the fun, having them call Eberle selfish, complain about how he didn’t pass on his amazing play, and Taylor Hall, who was making his NHL debut as well as the most recent #1 pick, talking about how Eberle stole his attention.
Eberle was interviewed and spoke of how this incident has ruined his relationships with the teammates and if he could do it over again, how he wouldn’t score the goal because it wasn’t worth the aftermath.
All in all, this was a hilarious report. It was also done realistically, maybe too realistically. I knew from the beginning that it was a spoof, but obviously my friends did not. TSN ended by showing Eberle laughing following his answer, something they definitely had to cut out of all of the interviews, but apparently this wasn’t obvious enough for everyone.
It’s a fine line between having fun and maintaining credibility, but in my opinion, TSN was bang on this time.
