I’m a sports guy.
I love watching sports, reading about sports, playing sports, talking about sports… you get the idea.
So, it makes sense that this week my story would be about sports. Well, kind of. The Cambridge Hawks, which is the minor hockey team in the city, are spending Halloween trick or eating. No, that’s not a typo, the kids are getting canned good for the local food bank on Monday.
This story was easy to do, because everyone was all in the same spot so we could do the whole story in one smooth swoop. The one obstacle was the main characters themselves: the kids. Now, the coach cleared it with the parents beforehand, getting permission for us to film their kids, but at the age of 14, let’s just say that shutting them up definitely wasn’t the problem.
I figured they had done this before, but I thought I’d ask anyways, to warm them up, let them know I was a fun guy, that they could talk to me. Here’s how the first question went…
Me: So, have you ever done this before?
Kid: Nope.
Now, perhaps they were teaching me a lesson. Maybe they were so incredibly smart and aware that they were subtly telling me, “You know better than to ask a question that you can get a one word answer for!” Or, perhaps they were just camera shy. And, as the interview went on, I realized that either ALL my questions were garbage, or they were indeed camera shy. Were these kids evil geniuses, tweaking my interview techniques and showing me my weaknesses? Or were they just kids? I guess I’ll have to wait until my next interview to find out.
(Note: To be fair, we did end up getting some good soundbites from these kids. It just took a lot of questions, and some creative editing.)
